Designed to Shine

As a little girl I grew up in a Baptist Church. My father was a Deacon and my mother was a Sunday school teacher. When it was my dad’s turn to lead the song in devotion it was like clockwork, he always sang this song Shine on Me. The chorus says shine on me, shine on me, let the light from the lighthouse shine on me. As a little girl, I would wonder why they were singing about a lighthouse that was odd since we were in church. Don’t judge me! As I got older, I began to understand that the lighthouse in that song wasn’t the tower. No, it spoke of the Light of the World – Jesus. For He says in John 8:12, When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” In that song the writer is asking Jesus to shine His light on him. You are designed to shine. You weren’t put on this earth to be dull or lackluster. We are purposed to shine, to be the light. Tell yourself…Get your shine on!

You are equipped to Shine. Light does many things. What does it do? Light brings illumination, clarification, awareness, adoration, perception, revelation, growth, amongst other things. We have been equipped, commanded, expected - We are supposed to shine. But here is a tough question - Why do we hide the light? The world is dark so why don’t we take our rightful place and stand? The enemy wants us to believe that we are not adequate enough to allow His light to shine – this is 90 watt territory and you only have 60 watts; your light flickers, you have a dimmer light, you need to look a certain way, come from the right zip code, talk a certain way…craziness! The trick of the enemy.

Now read this part carefully….We get in our own way. Not you, your cousin...OF COURSE YOU (me included). We are so preoccupied with our stuff that we forget that we have been commanded, have a great responsibility to shine. Some of us may not truly understand how impactful we are and how God designed us to stand out. “I only have this small part in the play”, we say. But the play would lose its essence if you weren’t in it! Yes, you turn on a light and everybody notices. It draws attention. You can be the light. You know why because you ARE the light.

My dear friend you are designed to shine. The shine isn't to highlight you but it is to glorify the Father so that someone will ask you about your Shine. Your answer then will point them to Christ.

You have been called out of darkness to be a light of hope to those around you.
